DEFINITION
What Is a Fractional CTO?
A fractional CTO is an experienced technology executive who leads a company's engineering and technology strategy on a part-time basis. The most common client is a private-equity-backed portfolio company that needs senior technical judgment without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire. The role covers architecture decisions, team building, roadmap sequencing, and board-level technology reporting.
How it works in practice
A fractional CTO typically holds a standing cadence with the CEO and engineering leadership, sits in on board reporting, and owns the technology plan the value-creation thesis depends on. The role is an operating one rather than an advisory one. It comes with real decision rights, a defined operating rhythm, and accountability for outcomes. The CLEAR™ framework is the operating model, and it is the same framework used to sequence hold-period technology work.
Where firms get it wrong
Two mistakes are common. The first is hiring a full-time CTO before the business can define the role. That commits the company to the cost and to a specific profile too early. The second is buying advice alone, from a consultant who diagnoses problems and never owns execution. A fractional CTO has the seniority to make decisions and enough time inside the company to be accountable for them. The role is sized to what the portfolio company needs this quarter.
When you need it
The common triggers are a portfolio company with a real engineering organization and no senior technology leader, or a founder-CTO who has outgrown the role. A post-close plan that needs an operator to run it is another. That work runs through the Lead engagement.
